This initiative transcends the mere provision of clean energy and sustainable transportation; it embodies a comprehensive strategy for emergency preparedness and robust community engagement, deeply rooted in the values of environmental justice. The hub's deployment of bi-directional batteries is strategic and deliberate. CalEnviroScreen data reflects the dire need for reliable power in times of crisis, particularly within a community that battles with a 97th percentile in PM2.5. These batteries are designed to serve as a backbone of support for emergency shelters, hospitals, and essential services, ensuring operational continuity when it's most needed, thereby preserving lives and livelihoods.
Moreover, the hub's EV charging stations are multifunctional. In everyday use, they support the transition to electric vehicles, reducing harmful emissions. In emergencies, they are pivotal, offering power for first responders and essential workers while providing charging solutions for those affected by disasters. Vision: The Green Innovation and EV Charging Hub is conceived as a transformative solution directly responding to the critical findings from the CalEnviroScreen analysis for Fresno's Blackstone Corridor. With an 82nd percentile for ozone, a 97th percentile for PM2.5, and high ratings in diesel PM and traffic density, the community's need for substantial intervention is evident.
Our project is designed to mitigate these environmental burdens and fulfill the following legislative categories:
- Emergency Preparedness: The hub's bi-directional batteries are not arbitrary selections but a strategic response to the 75th pollution burden percentile that risks exacerbating crises. They ensure that essential services such as hospitals remain operational during power outages, directly impacting the community's preparedness and response to emergencies.
- Public Health Protection: Tackling the 92nd asthma percentile and the 95th low birth weight percentile, our hub will introduce EV infrastructure and renewable energy sources. This will reduce reliance on fossil fuels, thereby lowering exposure to harmful particulates and improving overall public health.
- Environmental Health and Climate Decision-Making: Informed by the CalEnviroScreen data, the hub aims to serve as a living laboratory for sustainable practices, informing policy decisions with real-world data on renewable energy integration and EV adoption, guiding the region's approach to climate resilience.
- The project's community service extends beyond infrastructure: it includes robust educational outreach to empower residents with the knowledge to leverage these resources, thus addressing the 71st education percentile. Reductions in pollution levels are projected through decreased reliance on combustion-powered vehicles, directly measured by improved air quality metrics. Economic benefits are anticipated through job creation and the stimulation of local businesses by increased foot traffic to the charging stations.
